Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – December 2017

This is the 62nd income report as part of the zero backlink experiment.

This will also be the final income report I ever publish on the blog

What I Have Done In December

Last month I started planning and preparing for 2018 and December marked the start of executing that.

That includes making changes to the look and feel of the blog and experimenting with some new content formats.

But I’ll also be killing income reports moving forward…

Why I Am Terminating Income Reports

When I first started the blog, it was nothing but an SEO experiment which got out of control.

The income reports were there to help track the progress of that experiment and to help other people see behind the scenes of what is actually going on.

Over the years I have recieved thousands of emails thanking me for sharing my knowledge in these reports.

I have chronicled the entire journey of the blog from zero to well over a million dollars and I have thoroughly enjoyed doing it.

But at this point, the income reports no longer serve their purpose.

On top of that they take a huge amount of resources to put together every month and have a very short life span when I look at the performance of all income reports historically.

All of that time and resource could be invested in producing a much higher level of content across the board and that is the direction I have decided to go.

So while this will be the last income report I publish on the blog, it opens the doors for some incredible things in 2018.

Thank you to every body that has joined me on the journey and offered support over the past years, it’s been wild to say the last.

But now – it’s time to take it to the next level. I owe it to you all.

Key Focuses For 2018

So what is the “next level” you ask?

Well that is going to come in a variety of different flavors-

Easier To Digest Content

One of the biggest problems with the blog is content is very fractioned and theres no easy way to go from SEO beginner to SEO pro in any logical order.

I want to consolidate and organise that experience so you can get the answers you need no matter what stage of the SEO journey your at.

To do that I need to create a structure set of pages that help connect the dots in a way that makes sense.

That is going to take around 140,000 words of new content along with all of the other content enhancers like videos, graphics and downloads.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Last month I told you that I upgrade my computer to an Intel Core i9 7920x, with 128GB RAM and a Nvidia GTX 1080Ti.

I also bought a new camera body, lenses, tripod, teleprompter, bags, cases and all the accessories you can think of.

All of that is to help produce high quality video throughout 2018.

Right now I am still waiting for some essential parts of kit to arrive – but I had a quick play with my how to start a blog video last month.

Develop The Team

Better quality content is going to demand more resources. So I am going to start developing the team as a primary focus.

I have already started doing that by handing graphic design over to Kapa99 which you may have seen with the new featured images across the blog.

That is also going to grow to include more key people so I can accelerate the rate that I deliver high end content to you.

I’m will also invest in a community manager that is dedicated to answering all of your SEO questions and nothing else – this person is proving hard to find.

Blow Your Mind

And most importantly, my mission is to blow your mind with the user experience here end to end which is very fractioned at the moment.

By bringing it all together that will help to accelerate your success.

Because who knows?

Maybe you’ll become one of the many readers that have seen incredible results from the tutorials here.

Its refreshing to have a 100% ethical, honest & knowledgeable leader to learn from
Matt, I love your attention to detail and straight-shooting nature. It is a well known fact that due to the massive potential income, plus the draw card of working anywhere, that many 'shady' people are drawn to our industry. It is super refreshing to have a 100% ethical, honest and knowledgeable leader to learn from. Keep it up, you are an example of what is good in our industry.

From 5000 Pageviews Per Month To 40,000
As a college student from Ghana, the odds were stacked against me in building a blog. When I started in 2012, the going was tough. I made tons of mistakes and learned along the way.

Thankfully, I found matthewwoodward.co.uk in 2014 and since then the odds turned in my favour with traffic rising from 5,000 to 40,000 per month!
Giovanni Olakunori - LarnEdu.com

Anant Mendiratta

I reach 50k uniques a month following your advice, Matt !!
There have been very few people in the SEO industry whose influence on me did so much to change my approach to SEO, affiliate marketing and creating great content. One of those special people is Matthew Woodward. His tutorials are easy to follow and replicate. I was able to get workouttrends.com from zero to 50,000 uniques per month within 7 months of launching after following his advice. Thank you for the blog. I learned a lot from him over the years.
Anant Mendiratta - Workout Trends

Tom C

Thank you for all of your help!
I have learned more from Matthew than anybody else on the web. His willingness to share his free tips and tactics go far beyond what I have ever paid for in the past.
Tom C - Archers Bikes

Those stories are the only success metric that matters in the end because your success, is my success.

Took A Break

I also spent the last couple of weeks taking a break in Nicaragua visiting just about every place you can think of border to border.

It was great to get lost in a totally different world and fully rely on Spanish for the duration.

It’s taking a while to “change my chip” back to the real world as I am putting the final plan of attack together – but there’s no rush.

Content Creation

Like last month I only published 2 posts this month, including the income report.

But one of those posts was me getting my feet wet with 4k video while I wait for the rest of the equipment to arrive.

So far the all new how to start a blog tutorial has done pretty well with traffic and I am using this as a test base to decide on future change to the blog.

Crunching The Numbers

So let’s get our hands dirty and see how the blog has actually performed this month.

Visitor Statistics

Traffic increased from 55,657 (1,855/day) to 60558 (1,953) per day which is pretty good for the Christmas period in this niche.

That also brings traffic above my desired 60k per month marker.

Most Popular Content

The all new start a blog tutorial stole the show this month by a significant margin.

As usual the making money on Fiverr tutorial stayed strong and the Successful vs Unsuccessful people post saw a big jump.

Top Traffic Sources

One of the biggest changes in traffic this month comes from Pinterest.

This is because I had the Kapa99 team design some custom images for this tutorial that are doing really well on Pinterest.

Other than that not much has changed in terms of the top traffic sources which are made up from organic search and social.

Not much has changed in traffic sources with a good mix of traffic coming from Google organic and social sources.

Search Engine Traffic

Last month search increased to 45,662 (1,522/day). which has slumped a little this month to 41,414 (1,336/day)

YouTube Views

I lost all of my historical YouTube views because of changes I made to the branding – so I keep track of them separately.

YouTube views jumped from 12,344 to 29,524 this month which is largerly down to the release of my new video.

Total minutes watched jumped from 52,900 to 110,272 respectively.

Social Shares

At this time I can only track social shares for Facebook. It seems the plugin I am using isn’t working properly at the moment.

  • Facebook – 69,675 (66,141 last month)

Subscribers

The most important metric on the entire blog – earning a subscription from someone is the ultimate form of commitment and conversion.

There are now a total of 149,631 subscribers across all of the various channels compared to last months 131,550!

  • E-mail – 1,122 (1,965 last month) / Total: 66,675
  • Twitter – 128 (120 last month) / Total: 17,261
  • YouTube – 125 (115 last month) / Total: 15,380
  • Facebook – 308 (482 last month) / Total: 32,021
  • Google+ – 5 (41 last month) / Total: 17,823
  • RSS – -52 (-24 last month) / Total: 471

Income Report

Here are the numbers you really want to see-

Affiliate Earnings

Expenses

Consultation Earnings

I separate out the consultation earnings from the affiliate earnings. The blog drives affiliate sales directly and whilst it does generate consultation leads these are separate projects in their own right.

This month I didn’t taken on any consultation work so made a grand total of nothing!

Other Income

I’m working on another project right now that is part of the blog but not something I’m ready to talk about publicly yet or maybe ever.

I will declare the income here though as it wouldn’t be possible without the blog and ‘technically’ it is affiliate income.

Last month this dropped to $12,212.79 but has dropped off further to $12,019.69 this month.

Earnings Total

  • Affiliate Income – $21,737.79
  • Consultation Income – $00.00
  • Other Income – $12,019.69
  • Expenses – $2,711.57

Grand Total: $25,718.28 / £19,035.89 ($28,340.31 / £21,038.71 last month)

How to start a successful blog in 7 days

Signing Off

Well as they say, all good things must come to an end.

And this officially marks the end of income reports for the blog from $0 to over 7 figures.

But don’t worry:

This is all to set the stage for something much bigger in 2018.

So while I might not be sharing income reports with you, I will continue to show you how to grow your business.

Thank you again to everyone that has supported the blog over the years – you guys are amazing!

Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – October 2017

This is the 61st income report as part of the zero backlink experiment.

Every month I will publish a post like this one that shows you how this blog is progressing and everything I have done across the month to get it there.

These reports will help me track my own progress while teaching you what to do and more importantly what not to do.

What I Have Done In October

The first week of October was all about open cart week for my product.

But:

It really didn’t go smoothly – in fact, if it could have gone wrong – it did go wrong.

When Natural Disaster Strikes

Over the past few months I have being preparing for the JV launch of my product.

Everything was going great – that was until I opened the cart for sales on Monday and was struck by Hurricane Nate shortly after-

That left me with without mobile service, internet, electric and water nearly immediately after opening the cart for the launch.

So for the first 4 days of my 5 days of sales, I had absolutely no internet access what so ever.

Luckily I had already scheduled all of the launch emails BUT I was unable to respond to comments/questions and more importantly react to problems.

Problems like PayPal automatically reversing all payments to the tune of $40,000.

On the last day I managed to get back online and spent the entire weekend fixing problems, responding to people and trying my best to recover lost sales.

Honestly there was nothing more I could have done to prepare for the situation – with no electric, internet or mobile service I was at the mercy of the hurricane.

Moved To HTTPS

If you didn’t know already, Google made a significant change to Chrome this month that means if your site is NOT running HTTPS – it will be flagged as ‘not secure’ during form fills.

This is a huge trust problem and if you haven’t made the switch to HTTPS yet I highly recommend that you do it as soon as possible.

ESPECIALLY if you have any kind of form on your site like email sign up forms, contact forms, comment forms and more.

Take a look at an example of the ugly warnings below-

So what are you waiting for? Get it done NOW!

How To Migrate To HTTPS

Luckily for me activating HTTPS on the blog was as easy as a click of a button with Kinsta and came at no additional cost.

enable https

But not everyone is in the same boat as me.

Given the usual complexitys of moving to HTTPS and the risks of getting wrong, I highly recommend you get a professional to do it.

It should cost you around $50-$100 and the benefits of moving to HTTPS are far to strong to ignore now.

Content Creation

This month I published and updated 4 posts including the income report.

We started off with my incredible internal link building strategy which also shows you just how powerful internal links are when used correctly.

Then I updated my post about making quick money with surveys with some new insights and also results of my own earnings.

Last but not least I shared 21x IFTTT recipes for SEO, bloggers & digital marketers!

Crunching The Numbers

So let’s get our hands dirty and see how the blog has actually performed this month.

Visitor Statistics

Last month traffic jumped to 72,072 (2,402/day) due to a huge increase in Facebook spend but this month it settled down to 65,852 (2,124/day).

That is still above my minimum target of 60,000 per month although it would be nice to hit 70,000 per month consistently!

Most Popular Content

There was one piece of content that stood head and shoulders above the rest this month.

And that was my internal linking guide which absolutely dominated the top 10 content this month.

Far far far behind it in second place was my making money on Fiverr tutorial shortly followed by my expired domains guide.

Top Traffic Sources

Not much has changed in traffic sources with a good mix of traffic coming from Google organic and social sources.

An interesting note, I saw a huge leap in YouTube traffic the past months AFTER deleting YouTube Cards I had previously setup.

Search Engine Traffic

Last month search increased slightly to 43,483 (1,449/day) which has continued to increase this month to 46,972 (1,515/day).

YouTube Views

I lost all of my historical YouTube views because of changes I made to the branding – so I keep track of them separately.

YouTube views increased every so slightly from 12,346 to 12,440 this month.

Total minutes watch also increased to 55,994!

Social Shares

I am having a problem with Google+ data today, I will come back and update this section.

This month the total social shares across Facebook and Google+ increased from 85,635 to 89,866.

  • Google+ – 27,981 (27,673 last month)
  • Facebook – 61,885 (57,962 last month)

Subscribers

The most important metric on the entire blog – earning a subscription from someone is the ultimate form of commitment and conversion.

There are now a total of 131,550 subscribers across all of the various channels compared to last months 130,333!

  • E-mail – 633 (8,207 last month) / Total: 63,588
  • Twitter – 129 (320 last month) / Total: 17,013
  • YouTube – 89 (184 last month) / Total: 15,140
  • Facebook – 3,684 (3,684 last month) / Total: 31,231
  • Google+ – -46 (-4 last month) / Total: 17,777
  • RSS – 7 (7 last month) / Total: 547

October was a wild month to say the least with Hurricane Nate taking me out during the most critical 5 days of the year.

Although I haven’t reported the income from the product launch here, let me tell you that despite the problems – it still made a lot of money.

I never thought I would ever make a lot of money and be disappointed but here we are.

Over the next month I am working on some key improvements to the blog including flying to Miami next week to upgrade my video setup.

I have already prepared a huge “cornerstone” piece of content that will be launched when the first video from my new setup is ready.

Stay tuned folks – exciting times ahead!

Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – September 2017

This is the 60th income report as part of the zero backlink experiment.

Every month I will publish a post like this one that shows you how this blog is progressing and everything I have done across the month to get it there.

These reports will help me track my own progress while teaching you what to do and more importantly what not to do.

What I Have Done In September

For me September was all about preparing for the JV launch of my product.

Every minute of every day was dedicated to that sole project and what a wild ride it was.

Content Creation

As I was focused on the product launch during September, I didn’t pay much attention to blog content.

In fact this month was the worst month ever in terms of total content published.

But don’t fret – I already have the next 6 weeks of content scheduled out and locked in to make up for that.

Quuu Promote Experiment Failure

You may have heard of Quuu before – basically you can either sign up to get hand reviewed content suggestions relevant to your niche to share on social media easily.

Or you can sign up to submit your post to be reviewed as a content suggestions which takes seconds to do.

So after submitting 9 posts to the platform, I started to see some very encouraging results-

According to Quuu across my 9 posts I have had a total of-

  • 2,572 clicks

Incredible right!?

So knowing that the Quuu platform adds Google Analytics campaign tracking to the links, I jumped into Google Analytics.

I was excited!

But thats the the problem with expectation-

The reality is they sent 1 visit.

With 100% bounce rate.

And zero seconds on site.

So is Quuu just jacking peoples money and faking stats?

I would like to find out.

If you use Quuu promote please fill out this form.

Learning Video The Hard Way

Whilst preparing for the launch I ran into a huge amount of problems.

The main problem was not being properly prepared.

I wanted to re-record all of the launch videos and last time I did it with a GoPro and an iPad.

That worked great when I was filming outside but inside it was a different story and I very quickly learned the importance of lighting.

After many stressful days a friend came through and lent me some equipment-

After learning this lesson the hard way I am going to fly to the states later this month to pickup everything I need to build a full video studio.

Unfortunately I can’t just press a few buttons on Amazon and have it all show up here.

Re-recording the launch videos was very stressful and where I had planned for 3 days of work it ended up being 2 weeks of work.

But with that said, I am going to be producing much more video content in the future across the blog – stay tuned :)

Crunching The Numbers

So let’s get our hands dirty and see how the blog has actually performed this month.

Visitor Statistics

Last month traffic dropped to 56,457 (1,821/day) but this month it jumped to 72,072 (2,402/day) largely due to increased Facebook spend.

Most Popular Content

I really slacked off on content production this month.

The content piece that stole the show was actually a post I was using to generate leads for the launch, but I have removed that now.

So technically that means the guide to making money with Fiverr stole the top spot again!

Closely followed by my awesome guide to choose the best WordPress theme for you.

Last month search increased slightly to 44,121 (1,423/day) which has continued to increase this month to 43,483 (1,449/day).

YouTube Views

I lost all of my historical YouTube views because of changes I made to the branding – so I keep track of them separately.

YouTube views decreased from 13,746 to 12,346 this month.

Total minutes watch also dropped to 53,661!

Social Shares

I am having a problem with Google+ data today, I will come back and update this section.

This month the total social shares across Facebook and Google+ increased from 83,925 to 85,635.

  • Google+ – 27,673 (27,307 last month)
  • Facebook – 57,962 (56,618 last month)

  • E-mail – 8,207 (790 last month) / Total: 62,955
  • Twitter – 320 (190 last month) / Total: 16,884
  • YouTube – 184 (96 last month) / Total: 15,051
  • Facebook – 3,684 (177 last month) / Total: 30,668

While September was all about preparing and promoting my product launch, October is about sales.

The first couple of weeks will be focused on driving sales and also supporting new students as this is the “hand holding” period.

The final two weeks I intend to take a bit of time for myself and start building out a framework to begin growing a team to drive the blog.

Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – July 2017

This is the 58th income report as part of the zero backlink experiment.

Every month I will publish a post like this one that shows you how this blog is progressing and everything I have done across the month to get it there.

These reports will help me track my own progress while teaching you what to do and more importantly what not to do.

What I Have Done In July

July has very much been a month of spring cleaning and organisation.

From cleaning up all of my files and documents all the way through to re-organising everything in the house.

At the moment I have a little breathing room so I’m trying to make sure all of the right foundations are laid before my next grind.

Content Creation

I only published 3 new posts last month including the income report.

But the tutorials I did post – were awesome!

First we had these amazing Google Search Console hacks that was very well received.

That was followed by a huge update to my social media link building guide that shows you how to score some easy links.

Removed Links From Blog Comments

Unfortunately I had to remove the output of links from the comments section of the blog.

This was taking up a huge amount of time to manage – not only from the spam moderation side of things but also from the maintenance side of things in terms of cleaning up broken links.

So I decided to remove the output of links in the comment section entirely.

Essential Computer Maintenance

Both my desktop computer and laptop were in desperate needs of both physical and digital maintenance.

My laptop sounds like it was going to take off and I needed to add another 1GB SSD module.

The inside of my desktop computer looked like, well it looked like this-

Not only that but the side fans and graphics card fans were barely moving.

That is a bad combination of problems in a country that hits 32 celsius every day.

So I cleaned everything up, replaced a dead hard drive, fixed some broken USB ports, added a new M2 SSD drive and a bunch of new fans-

With physical maintenance taken care of then I moved onto formatting and reinstalling windows.

I have previously created ‘perfect system images’ with all of the software I need preinstalled for my desktop and laptop so it only takes 15 minutes to reinstall everything.

So with my desktop and laptop computers upgraded and running like new, I’m ready to rock!

Later this week my Herman Miller Renew desk and Aeron chair will arrive to complete my office upgrades – more details next month!

Crunching The Numbers

So let’s get our hands dirty and see how the blog has actually performed this month.

Visitor Statistics

Last month traffic dropped to 59,504 (1,983/day) but that has increased this month to 65,474 (2,112/day).

That increase is down to some improvements in Google and also an increase in Facebook ad spending when promoting new posts.

Most Popular Content

The social media link building guide stole the show this month with a significant lead.

That was closely followed by the guide to making money with Fiverr.

We also saw the Google Search Console tutorial perform well.

Top Traffic Sources

Not much has changed in traffic sources with a good mix of traffic coming from Google organic and social sources.

Search Engine Traffic

Last month search dropped slightly to 41,004 (1,366/day) which has increased slightly this month to 44,121 (1,423/day).

YouTube Views

I lost all of my historical YouTube views because of changes I made to the branding – so I keep track of them separately.

YouTube views decreased from 14,177 to 13,746 this month.

That also had an impact on total minutes watched which decrease from 64,553 to 59,907 respectively.

Social Shares

This month the total social shares across Facebook and Google+ increased from 81,055 to 83,925.

  • Google+ – 27,307 (27,001 last month)
  • Facebook – 56,618 (54,054 last month)

Subscribers

The most important metric on the entire blog – earning a subscription from someone is the ultimate form of commitment and conversion.

There are now a total of 130,333 subscribers across all of the various channels compared to last months 128,626!

  • E-mail – 920 (1,191 last month) / Total: 53,958
  • Twitter – 154 (123 last month) / Total: 16,374
  • YouTube – 170 (107 last month) / Total: 14,771
  • Facebook – 427 (977 last month) / Total: 26,807
  • Google+ – 9 (-22 last month) / Total: 17,837
  • RSS – 27 (118 last month) / Total: 586

July was a great month and everything feels fresh and ready to go.

Over the next month I am planning to get back into some kind of exercise routine as I’ve not done anything since Ironman on June 18th.

I also have some new content ready to rock and will be putting together a plan of action to release the 4th update to my course.

So with that said – it’s time to get cracking!

Thank you again to everyone that has helped this blog breaker the 7 figure barrier – you guys are amazing!

Monthly Income, Growth & Traffic Report – April 2017

This is the 55th income report as part of the zero backlink experiment.

Every month I will publish a post like this one that shows you how this blog is progressing and everything I have done across the month to get it there.

These reports will help me track my own progress while teaching you what to do and more importantly what not to do.

What I Have Done In April

With 2 months until my first ever Ironman triathlon (and first ever anything like that) I have really stepped up training 2 discipline per day.

That is having a huge impact on my overall energy so I’m spending more time refining everything from nutrition to technique.

At the moment the data says I am going to die but with 2 more months of hard training anything is possible!

Content Creation

With my Ironman prepeartion taking my energies, content was limited to 4 posts this month including last months income report.

We started out with an update to my Wikipedia link building tutorial that adds a great twist.

Then we looked at how to use Google Alerts to generate traffic, build links and spy on your competitors.

And let’s not forget these 10 Google Analyitcs SEO hacks that you cannot afford to miss.

Crunching The Numbers

So let’s get our hands dirty and see how the blog has actually performed this month.

Visitor Statistics

Last month traffic increased to 60,453 (1,950/day) but this has dropped to 56,603 (1,886/day).

Unfortunately that means I dropped below my comfort level of 60,000 visitors per month so it’s time to up my game next month to recover that.

Most Popular Content

The Wikipedia link building guide stole that show this month.

That was closely followed by the ever popular guide to making money with Fiverr.

We also saw the Web 2.0 PBN tutorial & expired domains tutorial hold positions.

Top Traffic Sources

Not much has changed in traffic sources with a good mix of traffic coming from Google organic and social sources.

Search Engine Traffic

Last month search traffic dropped to 45,175 (1,457/day) which has dropped off slightly more to 40,399 (1,346/day) this month.

YouTube Views

I lost all of my historical YouTube views because of changes I made to the branding – so I keep track of them separately.

YouTube views decreased from 19,146 to 16,466 this month.

That also had an impact on total minutes watched which decrease from 93,165 to 79,899 respectively.

Social Shares

This month the total social shares across Facebook and Google+ increased from 77,484 to 78,229.

  • Google+ – 26,726 (26,862 last month)
  • Facebook – 51,503 (50,622 last month)

Subscribers

The most important metric on the entire blog – earning a subscription from someone is the ultimate form of commitment and conversion.

There are now a total of 117,187 subscribers across all of the various channels compared to last months 116,158!

  • E-mail – 517 (-42,918 last month) / Total: 45,588
  • Twitter – 195 (418 last month) / Total: 15,681
  • YouTube – 221 (439 last month) / Total: 14,063
  • Facebook – 230 (299 last month) / Total: 23,402
  • Google+ – -1 (-20 last month) / Total: 17,882
  • RSS – -133 (62 last month) / Total: 571

Last month this was $11,507.85 which increased to $19,135.45 this month.

Earnings Total

  • Affiliate Income – $10,571.36
  • Consultation Income – $00.00
  • Other Income – $19,135.45
  • Expenses – $2,335.13

Grand Total: $27,371.68 / £21,207.58 ($21,992.83 / £17,629.45 last month)

Overall a lot of the statistics have been down, from traffic to new subscribers and more.

Over the next month I am purely going to focus on building that traffic back up to the 60,000 mark.

Juggling Ironman training and work is a huge challenge at the moment but I think things will get easier once a rhythm is established.

Until then, I’ve got to grind it out!

Thank you to everyone that has helped me reach my goals – I couldn’t do it without you, the reader!
