Backlinks vs. Content
For some time now backlinks have been the driving force behind many SEO Campaigns, the topic of whether Backlinks or Content is king has been a hot debate for years now. Some people believe that with just inbound links you can rank for anything, some people believe likewise for content. However, it always comes down to one thing for both sides - Quality. And VERY high quality at that. If you're going to rank for a very competitive term like say..."Orlando SEO" then you better have some strong links up your sleeve.
Likewise, if you're trying to rank for it using just content - you better have some top notch content to share with people.
Personally, I use both. I'm not very adamant as most people when it comes to picking what side is right, the color of my hat (black/white/grey), who's king, who's this, who's that. The internet marketing world is just as quick to put labels on people as anybody in this world. I like to look at what's working and how I can leverage its power to rank my own properties.
While it is true that backlinks alone can do the job - especially at lower competition levels such as local searches, content doesn't lag very far behind.
The catch with content is it can take a little longer to see results and the campaign to come into fruition, but the rankings are usually evergreen. That's not to say backlinks aren't if done correctly. However, the target demographic that tends to only build links tends to be on the lazier side and they usually are very quick to get slapped by Google and quit & call SEO "dead" thereafter.
Ranking Without Backlinks 101
With the latest advancements in Google search technology, it has become far easier than before to rank with just good quality content. The thing is - distribution matters just a little more. It's not enough to just put out article after article of long quality content but you need to get it in front of people. Something that has been working like bananas right now is creating very articulated & well-designed infographics
The reason being - when people are going crazy about a certain topic and something like an infographic comes along, they're going to be very quick to share it. Why?
- Infographics are fact-based.
- They look awesome.
- It sheds light on a hot topic.
- They just plain rock.
There's also something I talk very often and that's content syndication which works wonders!
Picture this - how much faster would you rank if you had top notch content constantly being syndicated to hundreds of highly authoritative social networking properties that then drop a highly trusted & authoritative link back to your website as well as slowly build up not only an audience but a highly targeted one at that.
Just imagine the power that your website would generate this way.
This is the driving principle of what's being called the semantic web and it is a large part of our strategy. To produce awesome content which gets shared and drives an obscene amount of backlinks to our branded properties.
Here's the kicker though - most self-proclaimed SEO Gurus are not going to follow this strategy, why? Because SEO's are lazy and are looking for cheap traffic without much hard work done on their part.
The semantic web is designed to not just look for backlinks or content but also how the content is being distributed, shared, linked to, and an infinite amount of other factors.
Where then does all this mumbo jumbo leave local business owners who may not have the time, energy or expertise to spend so much time developing quality content, syndicating & distributing it while also building links in the process?
Well, one option is to hire an SEO Agency that is competent enough to do it. And be very very intelligent when seeking to hire one. Most agencies have no clue what the hell they're doing and most of them quite frankly don't care.
SEO Firms are usually more preoccupied with selling and pulling churn & burn methods on local owners' sites which right off the bat do WAY more harm than good.
The way forward for SEO is only going to get harder and much more dynamic. It's important to stay on top of Google and finding innovative ways to give it what it wants.
Even though it's a very complex algorithm, it is not very hard to figure out.
I hope this whole thing makes sense and we'll talk soon,
David Alvarez.
