Google’s Rank Brain, Traffic & Rankings

Google's New AI Technology - Rank Brain - is the latest news to hit the SEO world. Although relatively new and very little is known about it yet, we do know something - it's having a great impact on rankings and how other traditional ranking signals are being affected by this.

So what does this new technology entail? Well, it focuses primarily on semantic search but it also demonstrates that Google is slowly shifting its attention towards traffic, UX and CTR as ranking factors. What are these 3 things?
  • Incoming traffic, where the traffic is coming from and how.
  • UX - User experience / interaction with the website, are users pogo sticking? Are they visiting more than just one page? Are they staying long? Are they scrolling / clicking / sharing? How's the bounce rate?
  • CTR - Are a lot of people clicking this website? Where are they clicking from? What's the impression / click rate? How long are they staying on this website? Are they immediately going back to the search results?
These are some of the questions that Google is now taking into evaluation when deciding where a website should be in the search engines result page. Our SEO strategy and content marketing plan revolve heavily around these strategies. Not only link building and structuring the website, but also finding innovative ways to drive referral and organic visitors back to the page and interacting with it.

How To Dominate With Google's Rank Brain Update

While it is important to build high quality links and encourage social sharing & activity, it is just not enough now to spend the vast majority of a campaign on these factors. A much bigger emphasis should be placed in traffic generation.

Infographics, press releases, content syndication, active social media profiles, and guest blogging on authority sites are great ways to achieve these goals. Keep in mind that while the act of guest blogging for the purpose of scoring links back to your website is frowned upon by Google, writing blog posts for authority industry-related websites is a great way to drive highly targeted leads to your site with users that are more likely to engage with the content. (Seeing as they clicked through from another site) These strategies form a factor in our overall ranking strategy and we highly advocate their practice. Here are some great examples of these strategies put into play:
The list is long, extensive and distinguished but by now you should get the point. If you're website has "stagnated" in the search results, then you can try some of the following methods to jump start your rankings back up:
These methods will all drive a considerable amount of traffic back to your website and revitalize your rankings, and if you do them all together, well...that's when the magic happens ;) Talk soon, David Alvarez.
