Keyword Placement For Optimal Results

In the early days of Google, having a certain keyword density would've been enough to propel your website to the top of the search results. As such, people began "keyword stuffing" and skyrocketing their website's rankings.

It wasn't long before Google caught on to the spam and started placing a heavier weight on inbound links. Search engines such as Bing, did not adjust their algorithms and due to the poor quality of websites showing up at the top of the SERPs people discontinued their use of them.

Today, Google owns a very, very large share of the market. And rightfully so - they evolved and continue to fight spam & develop new technologies to improve search.

Now, when it comes to keywords on the site, they are still incredibly important and are able to massively impact your rankings if done correctly.

Google places a higher premium on keyword placement rather than keyword density.
Alright - so where should you put your keywords?

Keyword Placement 101

  • Page Title
    • Your page title holds a large amount of weight when it comes Google evaluating what your website is about. Often times, a website with a proper page title and lesser domain metrics can very easily outrank a more authoritative website with an un-optimized title.
  • Permalink (slug)
    • Your URL structure / Permalink / Slug holds the largest amount of weight of all. You should always place the exact keyword you want to rank for here. Refer to the screenshot above.
  • Meta Description
    • Meta description is the short snippet of text right below URL & Page Title and is used to attract the user's attention. However, your keyword should always be here because it does hold some value when Google crawls your website.
  • Picture Alt-Text
    • As Google spiders cannot see pictures visually, it relies on us to tell it what the picture is about. As such, when you upload a picture on WordPress, it usually has about 4 boxes. Page Title, Caption, Alt Text, Description. Alt-Text is what Google uses to decipher what the picture is about. Therefore, your target keyword should always be here.
  • Headers
    • Your article headings is another one that Google heavily weights. Especially <h1> and <h2> tags. A word of caution - WordPress always uses your page title as a header automatically so watch out for repetition as to not get slapped by a Panda penalty.

Anchor Text

Now there is a a reason why I chose to do this section separately and that's because Anchor Text is largely dependent on backlinks which we do not control.

However, it should be noted that anchor text holds the most out of all the aforementioned factors and should be heavily managed.

When you build links back to your website, either through outreach, citations, web 2.0's or whichever other methods you use - be VERY mindful of anchor text.

The easiest way to have your website penalized and dropped for over-optimization is this. Your main money keyword should never be more than 5% of your anchor text profile. Always try to keep your backlinks as:
  • Branded - (Alvarez Web Services)

  • URL - (http://ift.tt/1H2aJm7)
  • LSI - miami seo company, miami seo experts, miami seo services, etc...
  • Broad - seo, digital marketing, internet marketing, online marketing, miami online marketing company
  • Generic - website, here, click here, go here, etc..
If you want to build keyword - rich anchor text, make sure you have a largely diversified profile. Doing press releases, building citations, branded web 2.0 properties & social media profiles, and others are great ways to dilute your anchor text and offer your website the best chance at ranking in the SERPs.
